2012-2013 Student Solo Competition & Scholarship Program

General Information

The PSSO Student Solo Competition was established to honor exceptional high school musicians who demonstrate how classical music has enriched their lives and the lives of others. The award is a $1,000 college scholarship and a solo performance with the Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra.

The competition is broken into two phases. Phase I involves reviewing applications, including resume and transcript, and an audio clip of the applicant playing a portion of the solo piece. After submissions are reviewed, a select group of finalists will be invited to audition in person, performing the entire solo work with an accompanist and engaging in an interview following the audition.

The competition winner will perform the solo work with PSSO at its winter concert in March 2013.

Eligibility

The Student Solo Competition is open to juniors and seniors during the 2012-2013 academic year. Home-schooled students are eligible if they are recognized as juniors or seniors.

Students who are local to the Greater Seattle Area are preferred (for rehearsal purposes) although students who live outside the area are still eligible.

The competition is limited to musicians who perform on traditional solo instruments, including piano.

How To Apply

Details for the next competition are currently being finalized. When guidelines have been set, they will be posted here. Please check back later this year for information about the next Student Solo Competition!
